Bazza Ranks & Turnstyle Paint the ‘Town Red’ with JB

Bazza Ranks and Turnstyle return to Bombstrikes on August 7 with ‘Town Red’, a smooth disco-funk workout featuring JB on vocals.

The pair have spent plenty of time digging into the gloss, swing and low-end weight of 80s funk, but ‘Town Red’ never feels trapped in the past. A relaxed bassline holds the track together, while clipped synth hooks, bright stabs and neat little melodic details give it a polished edge. There are shades of Chromeo in there, but the groove is tougher and built with the dancefloor in mind.

JB, also known as Jason Bradshaw, handles the vocal with the sort of ease the record needs. As one half of Ghost Writers on Tru Thoughts and a member of Roots Manuva’s Banana Klan, he knows how to sit inside a groove without crowding it. His performance gives ‘Town Red’ its character, adding a little swagger while leaving space for the production to breathe.

Bazza Ranks explains that the track started with Turnstyle’s first beat draft before JB was brought in to push the idea further. From there, the three kept tweaking and tightening the record until every hook, drum hit and vocal phrase sat exactly where it needed to.

The result is a warm, unhurried club record made for rooftops, packed basements and late summer sets. Funky without becoming lightweight, and polished without losing its bite.
