Renegade Riddims: J-Ronin

Back

Reading has always had a way of quietly sharpening blades, and right now one of its sharpest is J-Ronin. The J-Ronin Jungle Drum & Bass sound lives in that sweet spot where old-school attitude meets new-school execution, and it lands with serious intent. This is music built for basements, late hours and sweat dripping from the ceiling, not polite listening sessions.

J-Ronin has been steadily bridging generations through production that respects Jungle history while pushing forward with modern muscle. Think crusty amens dragged through pitch shifts and distortion, then snapped back into place with clinical precision. The breaks hit with purpose. The subs sit low and heavy, rumbling through ribs and concrete alike. It is raw where it needs to be and clean where it counts.

There is a clear lineage running through the sound. You can hear the influence of artists like Dillinja, Tim Reaper, and Unglued, but this is not imitation. It is absorption and reinterpretation. Old techniques are flipped into something current, engineered for modern systems and modern crowds. The result moves with urgency and bounce, always aimed squarely at the dancefloor.

What really cuts through is personality. J-Ronin’s energy bleeds into the music. Every drop feels intentional. Every switch feels like a grin behind the decks. This is Jungle Drum & Bass that knows exactly why it exists, to make people move, rewind and reload. It is the kind of sound that feels just as right in a dark warehouse as it does spilling out onto a festival rig at sunset.

Release-wise, J-Ronin has already planted flags on respected outlets like Subdue Audio and RDG Collective, while also feeding the heads with free downloads via SoundCloud. That balance between official releases and direct-to-community drops says a lot. This is about connection as much as progression.

The wider Jungle and Drum & Bass ecosystem is hungry for artists who understand the past without being trapped by it. J-Ronin fits that mould perfectly. Momentum is building and 2026 is shaping up to be a busy one. Expect more releases, more weight and more moments where the reload signal goes up.

J-Ronin steps up as the latest addition to the Renegade Riddims series, and the connection came together in proper rave fashion. A chance run-in at Planet V at fabric back in November sparked a memory. I’d already premiered one of his tracks, instantly clocked how much I loved his sound, and standing there in the middle of the dancefloor, it all clicked. The question was asked. The answer was an immediate yes.

It was one of those beautifully surreal raves. The kind of rave where the scene feels smaller than ever. I bumped into faces from completely different worlds, including a plumber who works for a company our letting agents use, pure randomness, and then someone who works the cloakroom at my favourite local spot, Unit Nine. Proper junglism, proper community vibes, and the perfect setting to lock in J-Ronin for a Renegade Riddims mix.

Lock in now. Follow the journey. This is Jungle Drum & Bass doing exactly what it should, shaking rooms, uniting heads and reminding everyone why the culture still matters.
